Experimental Analysis of the Friction Behaviour in Cutting

The friction between tool and workpiece can majorly affect the chip formation in metal cutting processes. The term friction is used to describe various mechanisms like adhesion, deformation of the roughness peaks and to a lesser extent micro ploughing [Som14]. They are differently affected by the relative speed, the temperature and the structure of the tribological partner’s surfaces. To gain a deeper insight of the entire cutting process, the knowledge of these inter-relations is essential. Within the framework of the present investigations two dif-ferent experiments for the examination of the friction contact between the heat-treated steel AISI1045 and a fine grained cemented carbide were conducted. Firstly, an orthogonal cutting experiment with a rake angle of γ = 0° were per-formed on a special chip formation analysis machine. In the second experiment the friction contact without cutting is investigated. The experimental setup used enables the measurement of the friction stress and the normal stress. Both exper-iments are carried out with differently prepared tool surfaces to examine the in-fluence of the surface topography and roughness on the friction behavior. The surface properties show a distinct influence on the mechanical load.
